Wonderful day!  I received my copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: An edition printed in the Shaw Alphabet in the mail!  This book was put together by Thomas Thurman with some beautiful Shavian fonts by Michael Everson!  You can find it on Amazon at the link above.  I am excited about plunking down on the couch with a cup a tea and reading it cover to cover.  The book is a pleasure to hold and beautifully formated.  I am giddy to be able to add it to my growing collection of printed Shavian works! :-D

I have put my transliteration of "The Journey into the Center of the Earth" by Jules Verne on hold, in part because I forgot how obscure and difficult much of the language is.  So I turned my attention to another story, a shorter and easier one.  I am almost done with my first rough draft of The Old Man and the Sea - By Ernest Hemingway!! :-D  Since this book is out of copyright, once I am finished, I can print it! To that end I am learning vectors in the hope that when this is all done an ready to be printed / published I can have it done in my very own Shavian font! (See previous post for info).  Yay! :-)

]]><![CDATA[February 03rd, 2013]]>Mon, 04 Feb 2013 04:16:28 GMThttps://shavian.weebly.com/blog-66650666606667966652/february-03rd-2013I've downloaded about 25 Shavian fonts from all over the web.  That means there are (or have been) a fair number of Shavian enthusiasts who know how to make a font.  Well, I would love to make one of my own.  Before I could do that I decided to take some of the old fonts where the shavian glyphs were mapped to the Latin areas and move things around to make them unicode compliant.  I then took other fonts on my system and used the latin characters to make a complete true type font.  I've messed up some of the font resulting in weird kerning and other issues but they are mostly still usable.  My goal is to have my own completed by the end of the year.  :-) Yay goals!!  Here is a quick photo of the 'fixed' fonts I have on my computer.  I'd love to be able to add the names of the orignal creators and will be working on tracking them down on an internet archive site.

]]><![CDATA[Logos]]>Sat, 26 Jan 2013 00:50:18 GMThttps://shavian.weebly.com/blog-66650666606667966652/logosI came across a Burger King and Coca Cola logo that some one on the internets had done in the Shavian script and was rather enamored with the juxtaposition of the familiar, ubiquitous logos done in the decidedly (and unfortunately  uncommon) Shaw Script.  I'll post those logos here along with a few of mine that I whipped up in photoshop for fun. :-)  

My transliterations and just everything else is currently taking a back seat at I just started a brand new job in December, my first after 6 months unemployment.  So nose to the grind stone and all!  

One final note, an enterprising individual (Tim Browne) transliterated the entire Edgar Allan Poe series and has just published a book!  I bought the English/Shaw version.  It is wonderful to have a printed book in Shavian!  I was a bit disappointed with the very poor font he decided to use and the lack of justification on the paragraphs.  Other than those two minor details I am enjoying reading it immensely! :-)  Link -->  Edgar Allan Poe in Shaw Script

EDIT: The Book mentioned above uses the air 𐑺, err 𐑻 reversal and the ha 𐑣, hung 𐑙 reversal.  I personally am not a fan of this but it only hinders my reading of the book slightly so I'll deal. :-P

]]><![CDATA[Shavian Ruled Paper!]]>Mon, 19 Nov 2012 20:54:44 GMThttps://shavian.weebly.com/blog-66650666606667966652/shavian-ruled-paperFirst, a quick update on my transliterations.  I am about 8 chapters into my second draft of Harry Potter and I am having an inordinate amount of fun rereading one of my favorite books in Shavian.  The first draft of the Jules Vern book in Shavian is almost done as well but that project is currently on hold.  I also transliterated the first chapter in the Dune book by Frank Herbert as well. :-)

Second, I found this wonderful PDF of Shavian ruled paper by wurdbendur at Deviant Art.  (See preview below)  I wish I had this when I was learning to write in Shaw as it would have helped guide me enormously!

Harry Potter Book 1 - Shavian Edition Cover
Using an out of date Firefox plugin written by Thomas Thurman I was able to completely transliterate one of my favorite books, Harry Potter, into the Shavian Alphabet!  I also modified a Redesign of the Harry Potter book covers by M. S. Corley to give it a distinctive feel.  This has been my dream since I embarked on my journey to transliterate my favorite books.  I wish my own forays into Applescript and Python scripting had been more successful but I am very satisfied and grateful for the work of Thomas Thurman.  I have already put together a preliminary epub of this book and I am currently reading it for errors and corrections. :-D  I am not sure of the copy right issues regarding this so it will not be released to the public and will be just an exercise in transliteration.  I am currently working on a Jules Vern novel, Journey to the Center of the Earth, as that is in the public domain and I can and will release it as an epub and printed (hopefully) book. :-D
