I came across a Burger King and Coca Cola logo that some one on the internets had done in the Shavian script and was rather enamored with the juxtaposition of the familiar, ubiquitous logos done in the decidedly (and unfortunately uncommon) Shaw Script. I'll post those logos here along with a few of mine that I whipped up in photoshop for fun. :-)

My transliterations and just everything else is currently taking a back seat at I just started a brand new job in December, my first after 6 months unemployment. So nose to the grind stone and all!

One final note, an enterprising individual (Tim Browne) transliterated the entire Edgar Allan Poe series and has just published a book! I bought the English/Shaw version. It is wonderful to have a printed book in Shavian! I was a bit disappointed with the very poor font he decided to use and the lack of justification on the paragraphs. Other than those two minor details I am enjoying reading it immensely! :-) Link --> Edgar Allan Poe in Shaw Script

EDIT: The Book mentioned above uses the air 𐑺, err 𐑻 reversal and the ha 𐑣, hung 𐑙 reversal. I personally am not a fan of this but it only hinders my reading of the book slightly so I'll deal. :-P

Hiya!

Short answer: It looks more authentic to the original logo.

Long answer: Many company names are 'made-up' words Google is based on the word googleplex. I am sure that if Shavian ever becomes more common that companies will continue to make up their own spellings to add distinction to their names. Therefor when I was having fun trying to mimic a few logos with the Shavian script I decided to duplicate the ooze character :-) On my smart phone which I was able to replace all the icon labels with the appropriate Shavian transliteration I have google spelled 𐑜𐑵𐑜𐑤. :-)

Just out of curiosity, what was it that you didn't like about the font I used in the book? BTW, I just released a Shaw version of The Dhammapada (The Path to Virtue) on December 10th, and I've got another one coming out before the end of the month.

Hi Tim!

I already got your new book and I am waiting for it to be delivered! I look forward to reading it! :-) I immensely enjoy adding to my Shavian Literature collection!

In regards to your question, I find the glyph line widths in your font to vary and the over all cohesiveness in form to be lacking. This, for me, makes it more of a challenge to read as an additional distraction. I reallize how difficult it is to make a font as i've been working on one myself and the kerning is giving me a hard time. I'd love to see you publish with an improved font (an open copyright one perhaps) with justified paragraph alignment. Regardless, I love your efforts! Keep it up!! :-D

Thanks for your honesty. Truth be told, there's a few things I'm not too fond of in the font, either, even though I made it myself based on the appearance of the characters in the original cheat card. In my latest revision (in the third book, which I just uploaded in standard form yesterday and will be uploading in condensed form today), I did make a few changes, like making the namer dot an actual dot instead of the bottom half of an oval (I'm not really sure what I was thinking when I came up with that one) and changed its position to the ` key so I could add back the ampersand. For some reason, my Up character always looked a lot thicker than the others to me, even though it was based on the same glyph that I used for ash, ado, on and egg. I've never really been to happy with the numbers in the font, either. When I get this latest book uploaded, I'll take another look at the font and see what I can improve on it. As for why I made it to begin with, quite frankly I hated the standard layout that was already out there and wanted to make one which seemed a lot more logical to me. I've finally got the layout completely perfected (for me), so it's about time I gave the characters a bit of a retool, filled in some gaps and tried to fix a couple of bugs (for some reason, the cursor doesn't show up on blank lines in Word and whenever I type a " or ' it switches them to Times New Roman). Just so you're aware, Lulu changed the paper in this one. I figured that no matter what format I chose, it would always be in the same brillian, almost flourescent white that was used in the Poe book, but apparently not. I'd be interested to hear what you think of it once the book arrives.

Really? How odd. Given that you ordered it on December 21st, even if you picked "so slow it would be quicker to walk there to pick it up mail" (ie. US Post Ground), I would have expected it to have been there by now. For the record, no, I don't have access to your info. So far, you're the only one, other than myself, who's ordered it so far. :-/

Thanks. "A tad frustrating doesn't even begin to describe it. Oh well. At least it's less frustrating than converting Poe by hand.

Wow, that sucks. :-/ Apparently none of Hemingway's work is PD in the US yet, or if it is, they haven't converted it for use on Project Gutenberg yet. It was published in the US in 1952. It looks like it'll be 2047 before it's PD in the US, but 2061 until it's PD everywhere (eg. Mexico is death+100 years, with NO rule of the shorter term). For stuff that I'm not creating from scratch myself, Mexico's the guideline that I've been trying to stick with.

Thanks, and you're welcome! :-) I'm pretty sure what I want to do for the next one. If I like the story enough, I'm planning 3 editions for it: standard, condensed, and transitional, which will introduce one new aspect of the Shaw Alphabet per chapter. It's 49 chapters long, which would make it perfect for the 48 Shaw characters plus the namer dot. the next one after that will be my first brand new work, which I'm guessing will be insanely popular, given the topic. I'm going to be sending off letters to some of the people involved in the original source which inspired me to go for it and see if I can make the title "The Authorised Book of... <insert mystery topic here>" and possibly get at least one of them to contribute a special foreword, or at least get a "sound bite" quote for the back of the book. Failing that, I'll just have to make it unauthorised.

Glad to hear that you now have PDFs of your works! :-D

As a side note, I finally got The Dhammapada Shaw Edition!! :-D It got stuck in a NYC post office during the mad Christmas mailing rush. It took the lady about 30 minutes to find it! I'm reading through it now. :-)
